Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn: Split After 6 Years, Cheating Rumors Spiral

On April 8, 2023, Entertainment Tonight reported that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn had called it quits after a six-year relationship. The couple met at the Met Gala in 2016 and seemed to have been in a  stable relationship since the time they got together. They kept their relationship extremely private but they were a known couple, so when we were hit with the break-up rumors, it came as a complete shock. Entertainment Tonight was the first source to report on this rumor, but soon after, many other sources began reporting as well. To this day, neither Swift nor Alwyn have confirmed or denied the rumors. 

According to Entertainment Tonight, the relationship had just run its course, so the split was not dramatic. There have also been rumors of cheating on Alwyn's behalf. This rumor began when Emma Laird made a post on Instagram, just ten days after the break-up rumors had begun, that consisted of photos she took of her cast mates. In this post, a photo of Joe Alwyn struck fans as suspicious. In the photo, Joe was holding onto a green scooter that looked like a scooter that had been seen in a photo of Laird that she had posted four months prior, on January 30. This was suspicious because the caption on the recent post was "Moments in March" when it seems that the photo of Alwyn was three months prior when he was allegedly still with Swift. 

These cheating rumors became even more prevalent when on April 19th, Taylor met up with some of her good friends, the Haim Sisters, Gigi Hadid, and Blake Lively. When this lunch began, all of the girls had been following Joe, but by the time it was over, all three girls had unfollowed him on Instagram. Then, on April 20th, she went out with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, and by the time this outing was over, Ryan had also unfollowed Joe. To this day, Alwyn still follows all of these people except for Blake Lively, but it was unclear if he had ever been following her. Now all of these people were friends with Taylor first, except for Ryan Reynolds. He had known Joe for six years as well, but these two were actually friends. Reynolds was close enough with Joe to have written the article posted in Time Magazine about him back in September of 2022. 

The news of Alwyn and Swift's split has been heartbreaking for some fans because of the music that was inspired by him. Songs on the album reputation such as "Dress", "Call It What You Want", and "New Year's Day" and on the album Lover, songs like "Lover", "Daylight", and "Cruel Summer" were all written about Alwyn. These songs were some fan favorites, which is why this break-up is so upsetting to fans. All these songs that once were written about the love of her life, are now tainted by their split. 

Now, only a month after their alleged split, there are rumors that Taylor has been secretly dating the lead singer of the 1975, Matty Healy. The pair dated briefly in 2013 but the relationship didn't go anywhere. Now, ten years later, they seem to be together again. Entertainment Tonight reports that they have been hanging out after a close friend of Taylor's, Jack Antonoff, reconnected them. In January, Taylor made an appearance during one of the 1975's performances and sang the lead single off of her newest album Midnights. This was the first time they had been seen together since years ago when they were reported to have dated. This weekend, at Taylor's shows in Nashville, TN, Matty was spotted by fans watching taylor in the crowd. He flew out from England on his break from tour to come see her perform. Even while Swift and Alwyn were still believed to be a pair, Joe had not been seen at a concert for her tour. After her show on Sunday night, Healy and Swift were seen in a chauffeured car going back to her condo. 

Are these things definite pointers to a relationship? Absolutely not. The pair could be completely platonic, but these things just make fans suspicious of a possible relationship. There is a video circulating of the 1975’s concert on May 3rd, that shows Healy performing his song "About You" and mouthing the words, "This is about you, you know who you are. You know. I love you". And then, on May 5th, Swift was seen mouthing the same words during her song "Cardigan" while Matty Healy was in attendance at the show. 

In my opinion, these things make me think that the two may be in a relationship. I'm not 100% confident of this, but I would not be surprised if they did turn out to be together, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they aren't.
